The best kind of apples to use for apple crisp should be an apple with a sweet and slightly tart flavor and firm texture. The apple needs to hold up when baked and keep its delicious flavor. Don’t be afraid to combine different apples for the perfect flavor.

  • GRANNY SMITH APPLES – they have a signature tart flavor and pair great with sweet apples, typically available year round
  • HONEY CRISP – extra-sweet flavor with a crisp texture that works excellent for baking and snacking
  • ENVY – sweet and crisp that keeps a firm texture when baked
  • GALA – have a gentle sweetness but hold up well when baked, typically available year round
  • PINK LADY – sweet-tart flavor with a wonderful crisp texture

8 X 8 INCH BAKING PAN – this recipe can easily be doubled and baked in a 9×13 pan also

PARING KNIFE – how thick you slice the apples will depend on how soft or “al-dente” you like baked apples

High Altitude Apple Crisp Ingredients:

APPLES – use 4-5 large apples or 6 cups of sliced apple. Use your favorite apples or see the list above for ideas on which apples to use.

WHITE SUGAR & BROWN SUGAR – adds the perfect kiss of sweetness

CINNAMON – adds the perfect amount of spice and flavor for tender cinnamon apples and crumble

SALT – don’t skip this, salt actually helps to enhance the flavors

BUTTER – I use salted and unsalted butter interchangeable in this recipe without difference in the taste.

FLOUR – use all purpose flour to help hold the crumble topping together

QUICK OATS – this creates the crunchy topping that is classic for a homemade apple crisp

Overview – How to Make High Altitude Apple Crisp:

PEEL & SLICE APPLES – how thick you slice the apples will depend on how soft or “al-dente” you like baked apples. I like to cut the apples around 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch little squares for the perfect little bite.

SPRINKLE APPLES WITH CINNAMON, SUGAR, AND SALT – dump the apples in a greased pan and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture

MELT BUTTER – in a microwave safe bowl melt the butter

COMBINE ALL CRUMBLE TOPPING INGREDIENTS – combine in a large bowl and mix together with a fork until crumbly

POUR CRUMBLE TOPPING OVER APPLES

BAKE AT 400 DEGREES F FOR 30 MINUTES

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups apples peeled & sliced
  • cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt

Crumble Topping

  • 1 ½ cup quick oats
  • cup all purpose flour
  • cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup butter melted

Instructions

  • PREHEAT OVEN TO 400 ℉ – prepare the baking dish by applying a thin coat of butter
  • PEEL AND SLICE APPLES – slice the apples to approximately ½ inch by ½ inch pieces or smaller for softer baked apples.
  • PLACE APPLES IN PAN & SPRINKLE WITH CINNAMON, SUGAR, & SALT – combine the cinnamon, sugar, & salt in a bowl then sprinkle over apples for even distribution
  • MELT BUTTER – in a microwave safe bowl melt the butter
  • COMBINE ALL THE CRUMBLE TOPPING INGREDIENTS – combine in a large bowl and mix together with a fork until crumbly
  • SPRINKLE THE CRUMBLE OVER THE APPLES
  • BAKE FOR 30 MINUTES

Apple Filling – 1/2 cup white sugar
Crumble Topping – 1/4 cup all purpose flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar
