Hi, I’m Rebekah

Welcome to Wild Flour Recipes, where I share my passion for baking with easy homemade recipes for the high altitude baker (and everyone else). I’m a PRN (as needed) ER nurse and stay-at-home mom to 3 kids. I make all of our meals and desserts from scratch and love to cook for our friends and family.

I grew up in Illinois, in the beautiful, flat (very flat) farm land. My love for baking and cooking started as a child. My mom and grandmas taught me to cook and let me learn along side them in the kitchen.

In 2017, I married the love of my life, Jesse, and moved to the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado at 8,000 feet elevation. We now have 3 kids, four years old and younger.

FUN FACT: Jesse and I’s moms were best friends since high school, so Jesse and I have known each other our whole lives. We joke our marriage was 75% arranged. I have memories of cooking along side his mom as a young girl. Wild Flour Recipes is in tribute to her as she had her own Wild Flour Bakery.

Baking at high altitude is HARD

When I moved to Colorado it seemed like all my cakes collapsed and my cookies spread to cracker thin. Recipes that had been passed down over many generations no longer worked for me. It didn’t take me long to realized that it was the high altitude that was affecting my baking.

High altitude can have CRAZY affects on our bodies and our baking. Everyone that lives at high altitude knows it dry, like DRY DRY. But did you know that the dry, arid air at high altitude can actually affect the way we taste food? High altitude also affects the leavening (the baking soda, baking powder, or yeast) in our baked goods because of the lower atmospheric pressure. Ever peak through your oven window and watch your cake rise up crazy fast and then completely sink in the middle when you take it out? I tried to make an angel food cake one time. It rose so fast and crazy, it spilled over the pan and caught my oven on fire.
