Ingredients:
Flour – use all purpose flour
Baking powder – this creates the fluffiness we all love and know
Salt – don’t skip this! A little bit of salt enhances all the other amazing flavors
Sugar – sugar adds the perfect touch of sweetness
Oil or Melted butter – For dairy-free waffles use your choice of vegan butter, vegetable oil, melted coconut oil, canola oil, or avocado oil
Large eggs – the eggs work together with the baking powder to help the waffles rise
Milk or Plant-based milk – For dairy-free waffles use your choice of coconut milk, soy milk, oat milk, cashew milk, almond milk, or rice milk. Personally my favorite is Silk Vanilla Almond Milk, in my humble opinion you can never have enough vanilla extract flavor.
Vanilla extract – a little bit goes a long way to add flavor
How to:
1. Plug the waffle maker in
This homemade waffle recipe is super easy and quick to mix up. So get your waffle maker started heating up.
2. Combine the ingredients
Add all of the ingredients except the milk to the large mixing bowl. Mix together and slowly add the milk until all the waffle batter is smooth.
3. Cook the waffle
When your waffle maker is hot and ready, spray with cooking spray or lightly brush with olive oil. Pour the batter into the hot waffle maker. Tip: check your waffle maker’s manufacturer’s instructions for the right correct amount of batter. Typically a Belgian waffle iron is 1 cup, regular waffle iron 1/2 cup, and mini waffle iron 1/4 cup of batter.
Cook the waffle until it is golden brown and your desired crispiness.
4. Repeat and enjoy!
Continue to repeat this process until you have the right amount of waffles you need. Serve with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
FAQs:
Belgian Waffle vs Regular Waffle
Belgian waffles are typically thicker than American “regular” waffles. Belgian waffles can be made with yeast to create an extra rise during the cooking process. Regular waffle batter can be used, just simply double the amount of batter – typically 1 cup of batter.
Pancake vs Waffle Batter
Waffle batter contains a higher fat content than pancake batter. The higher fat content in a waffle batter creates a richer flavor and helps the waffle to not stick in the waffle iron. Pancake batter contains more milk, creating a thinner batter.
Can you Freeze waffle batter?
Yes. Waffle batter and pancake batter can be stored in the freezer. Place the batter in an airtight container or freezer Ziplock bag, pushing any excess air out. Freezer for up to 2 to 3 months.
How long does waffle batter last in the fridge?
Store leftover waffle batter in an airtight container for up to 3 days. The batter may start to separate while being stored in the fridge. Gently whisk the batter to bring all the ingredients back together before using it.
How to reheat a waffle
There are several options for reheating a waffle:
- Toaster – place in a toaster for 2-3 minutes
- Oven or toaster oven – preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit then cook for 4 minutes
- Microwave – microwave for 30 seconds at a time until desired warmth is achieved. Note: the waffle will not keep a crispy outside
How to store leftover waffles
Cool leftover cooked waffles to room temperature and place in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
High Altitude Waffle Recipe without Milk
Are you making waffles at high altitude in the mountains? You’re in luck! This homemade waffle recipe works fantastic at 8,000 feet of elevation. Enjoy hot and fluffy waffles while you watch the snow fall or the sunrise over the mountains.
Waffle Variations:
Buttermilk Waffle Recipe
Use buttermilk or vegan buttermilk in this recipe to create more flavor to your waffles and make the batter rise even more. Don’t have buttermilk on hand, no worries! Make your own:
- 1 3/4 cup of milk or milk substitute
- 1 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar
Chocolate chip Waffle Recipe
Make this waffle recipe according to the directions and add 1 cup of chocolate chips to the batter. I like to use mini chocolate chips.
Chocolate Waffle Recipe
Make delicious chocolate waffles by adding 1/2 cup of cocoa powder to this recipe. Make sure to decrease the flour to 1 1/2 cup. For Chocolate Chocolate Waffles, add 1 cup of chocolate chips to the batter or top of chocolate chips.
Peanut Butter Waffle Recipe
Make this waffle recipe and add 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter. For Chocolate Peanut Butter Waffles (can I just say – dream come true!) add 1 cup of chocolate chips.
Strawberry Waffle Recipes
Make strawberry waffles with fresh strawberries baked into the waffles. Make this waffle recipe and add the following ingredients to the batter:
- 1 cup fresh strawberries – frozen strawberries can add too much liquid to the batter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- Toss the diced strawberries with the flour. Gently fold the floured strawberries into the waffle batter. Try to not overmix or the juice can turn the batter pink.
- Cook according to the instructions above
