Best kind of apple for apple bread:
The best kind of apples to use for apple bread should be an apple with a sweet and slightly tart flavor and firm texture. The apple needs to hold up when baked and keep its delicious flavor. Don’t be afraid to combine different apples for the perfect flavor.
GOLDEN DELICIOUS – mild sweetness, tend to break down when baked so they should be combined with a firm apple (like granny smith apple)
GRANNY SMITH APPLES – they have a signature tart flavor and pair great with sweet apples, typically available year round
HONEY CRISP – extra-sweet flavor with a crisp texture that works excellent for baking and snacking
ENVY – sweet and crisp that keeps a firm texture when baked
GALA – have a gentle sweetness but hold up well when baked, typically available year round
PINK LADY – sweet-tart flavor with a wonderful crisp texture
Recommended tools:
- CUTTING BOARD & KNIFE – the apples should be peeled, cored, and sliced into small pieces
- 2 MEDIUM MIXING BOWLS – the apples and cinnamon will be mixed in 1 bowl and the bread dough mixed in another. I’m all about minimizing dirty dishes so I use the apple bowl to mix up the streusel topping
- BREAD PAN – I love to use a glass bread pan so I can see the bottom and sides of the bread
High Altitude Apple Bread ingredients:
- APPLES – I love to use granny smith apples for a hit a tartness in the bread. The apples should be peeled, cored, and cut into small 1/2″ pieces
- CINNAMON – the perfect warmth of spice brings the flavor of the bread alive
- BROWN SUGAR & WHITE SUGAR – creates the perfect kiss of sweetness
- LARGE EGGS – eggs help bind all the ingredients together
- FLOUR – I use all purpose flour
- VANILLA EXTRACT – small amounts help to enhance the flavors (a little secret of mine…I never measure vanilla)
- BAKING POWDER – this helps create a rise in the apple bread
- BUTTER – melt butter for in the dough and the streusel topping for a delicious buttery texture
How to make Apple Bread with Cinnamon Streusel:
- PREHEAT OVEN & PREPARE PAN – preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease your bread pan
- PEEL, CORE, & CUT APPLES – cut the apples into 1/2 inch pieces
- COMBINE APPLE MIXTURE – mix together apple chunks, cinnamon, and brown sugar until the apples are thoroughly coated
- COMBINE BREAD DOUGH – melt the butter, then add all the ingredients together. Mix until the batter is smooth.
- ASSEMBLE BREAD – add half of the bread dough into the prepared bread pan. Then add half of the apple mixture on top of the dough. With a spoon lightly swirl the dough and apples together. Then repeat for the second half of the bread dough and apple mixture.
- COMBINE STREUSEL TOPPING – melt the butter and mix in the rest of the ingredients with a fork to create clumps.
- ADD STREUSEL TO BREAD PAN – sprinkle the streusel topping on top of the assemble bread dough and apples
- BAKE – bake the apple bread at 350°F for 60 minutes or until the center is fully baked. Test the center by sticking a toothpick in and make sure it comes out clean.
- COOL & REMOVE FROM PAN – allow the bread to cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of bread to loosen from the pan. Then carefully turn pan over and very slowly life the pan up to loosen the bottom.
- ENJOY!
